Regarding Dr. Carol Ann Gilmore
According to the medical board’s accusation, Dr. Carol Ann Gilmore failed to properly manage Elisa Serna, who had been going through heroin and alcohol withdrawal. On the day of Elisa’s death, Dr. Gilmore ordered Elisa to have Ativan but didn’t speak with her or perform an exam. Instead, she “stood by and watched” as another doctor evaluated the patient.
The medical board stated that Dr. Gilmore should have done more to treat Elisa. She did not refer Elisa to the emergency department for treatment of her active substance use withdrawal during pregnancy, did not order a stat comprehensive blood panel, complete blood count, urinalysis or electrocardiogram, and did not order IV fluids.
On August 16, 2024, the medical board decided to revoke Dr. Gilmore’s license to practice medicine. She is ordered to pay the amount of $29,606.25 of the cost of the investigation and enforcement to the board.
Regarding Nurse Danalee Pascua
Nurse Danalee Pascua is currently awaiting a decision from the California Board of Registered Nursing regarding the potential revocation of her nursing license. This situation stems from an incident on November 11, 2019, death of Elisa Serna. Pascua was responsible for providing care to Serna at the time.
On May 16, 2024, state nursing regulators filed an accusation against Pascua. The accusation is based on the events that transpired when Elisa Serna collapsed in her cell. It was alleged that instead of providing the necessary medical assistance or calling 9-1-1, Pascua walked away from Serna. This lack of action led to charges of involuntary manslaughter being brought against Pascua.
Regarding Dr. Friederike Von Lintig
According to the accusation filed by the Medical Board of California on October 3, 2023, Dr. Friederike Von Lintig was grossly negligent on multiple occasions in her treatment of Elisa Serna, a 24-year-old mother who was pregnant and experiencing heroin withdrawal before she died. Serna was in Von Lintig’s care on the final day she was alive.
The Medical Board of California took significant action in response to Dr. Friederike Von Lintig’s involvement in the tragic case of Elisa Serna’s death. Dr. Von Lintig’s medical license was suspended by the Medical Board of California. The accusation alleged that she was grossly negligent in her treatment of Serna. Despite Serna’s symptoms of drug withdrawal, dehydration, and vomiting, Dr. Von Lintig did not adequately address her condition.
The medical board claims Von Lintig didn’t check Serna’s vitals and also incorrectly reported that Serna had finished withdrawal treatment. The medical board’s decision highlighted that Dr. Von Lintig failed to provide necessary treatment for withdrawal, which ultimately led to Serna’s death. This caused Dr. Von Lintig to face an involuntary manslaughter charge related to the death of Elisa Serna.
Update: Regarding Friederike Von Lintig
Dr. Friederike Carla Von Lintig, a physician, in the 2019 jail death of a pregnant woman, is surrendering her medical license on September 27, 2024. The Medical Board of California alleges that Dr. Von Lintig committed gross negligence while treating Elisa Serna, a 24-year-old inmate at the Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee, CA.
Elisa Serna died in November 2019 from complications related to substance abuse and early pregnancy. The Medical Board claims that Dr. Von Lintig incorrectly noted in Serna’s chart that she had completed treatment for alcohol and heroin withdrawal. Despite Serna’s fainting spells and pregnancy, Dr. Von Lintig did not send her to the emergency room for treatment.
The Medical Board’s disciplinary order states that Dr. Von Lintig did not document any vital signs in Serna’s chart and failed to complete a physical or neurological exam.
Von Lintig is ordered to pay the amount of $61,508 of the cost of the investigation and enforcement to the board.
